Tom and bulldog Buddy putting in a good day, learning a little along the way, and keeping it neighborly on their Vashon Island farm.
We live in an 1888 farmhouse on a few acres on Vashon Island in the heart of Puget Sound, where I share projects, random thoughts, farm duties, and a bent to grow fruit, flowers, and good food. I embrace the beauty of the bulldog, succumb to the power of pie, worship the peach, contend summer is never long enough, and have never met a hammock I didn't like.
Welcome!

Best Long-Handled Weeding Tool : Stirrup or Scuffle Hoe
Просмотров 8 тыс.7 лет назад
The stirrup hoe is a great way to weed your garden beds standing up. If you use it regularly when weeds are young or seedlings, they die back easily. Should some weeds spring back, just grab your stirrup hoe or hula hoe take them to task. Repeated use usually does the job. Happy Gardening!

Easy Way to Plant a Lot of Bulbs
Просмотров 22 тыс.7 лет назад
If you have a lot of bulbs to plant, I recommend using a bulb auger, which is a spiral metal screw-like attachment that drives right in the ground and leaving a perfect hole for the bulb. And it loosens the soil at the same time, something that will help the bulb root more readily.

Growing Strawberries in a Strawberry Pot
Thanks for posting. We have a Enterpirise Mf’g. Cherry Stoner from Philly. Looks nearly identical. Our tart Cherry tree was exploding this year. So much that the squirrels couldn’t get them all. Figured I would check RUclips instead of doing a ‘trial by error’ test with the stoner. This was perfect. Thank You Tom.
My neighbor has a sour cherry tree and she no is elderly so longer harvests the cherries. She said I can have them. I am so excited. 🥳 She even bought me the exact cherry pitter you show here at a local vintage resale shop. Thank you for sharing this video! I can’t wait to try it. I think the cherries will be ripe in about a week.
Omg I'm dying. 😂😂 that is such a bulldog thing. Mine make that noise too... especially when they want butt scratches.
Thank you!
Wow , the sound is super soothing and feels so heartwarming, I can keep this on all night , especially when i eat a beautiful ripe peach!! Thanks so much!!
I live in Kona Coffee country and we use these to extract coffee beans from the coffee cherries. Works great, but is the opposite of stoning cherries; eg the beans come out where the seeds appear when stoning cherries, and the waste hull of the coffee beans drops down where you get the cherry "meat" in the video. Still, way cool and very effective.
Thanks also for the info about ripening peaches. I've got a supply incubating right now. Thumbs up.
Yay! Thanks.
Oh he's an English bulldog which means he's British which means he has clinical depression okay
Brilliant! Like Jessica Woodard below, I could say I eat avocados every day. I cut them in half, then eat with a spoon, almost doing what you do here as I scoop them out. And yet it never occurred to me that the same scooping motion with a spoon would make nice slices for recipes which call for sliced avocados. “if you don’t know, now you know”! I will use this, thank you, Tom.
Were cane l by thisone?
Eri, you can find them to buy on EBay and Etsy sometimes.
Sounds of the sound! Great ferry ASMR.
How do you buy a farm
😲 WHAT!??! I'm going to try this today! Why have I never thought of this??? I eat an avocado every single day. For years. And I mean like... 20 years. And I've never thought of this. Thank you!
Me, too, Jessica! I eat them with a spoon but never thought how well that slices them. Now I know! (I referenced you in my comment above, but I thought I should also tell you as a reply to you. 🤗)
What a video to clarify my doubts, I am from El Salvador and just found one of this at sale for 5 usd, It did look like an old item to me but I did not have an idea what was it, it just called my attention and I decided to take it home, bad thing cherries are not so common here, but now I want to get some to use it... Cheers.
I seen a video where you can just push the cob straight into that hole and its removes the corn automatically. No cutting needed.
Boil first and shove through the hole 😉
WARNING. Do not give corn cobs to your bulldogs or any dogs. This can cause obstruction in the digestive system and it is an emergency which can result in surgery or death.
Yeah this, I hope this dude isn't giving the cobs to his bulldogs Corn is fine but the Cob definitely isn't
So lovely 😍
Good to know it won't work on big cherries.
Dude, all day long 🤦🏻♂️ 😆
It pits sweet cherries too. I never pitted sour cherries with one, just Royal Anne.
Mr Bully is mad at you. You giving the laptop attention and not him. And he is letting you know in a nice manner. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love me now
How dare you not pet me for 1/8th of a second, you'll pay for your crimes in blood.
Lmao 😂
Thats just Gross !! 😟
what exactly do you found gross, Wanda!?
Your gross
Go Buddy!
Buddy looks exactly like my parents bulldog Ginger. I love when they talk.
Sounds like me in the bathroom when I’m trying not to make sounds
My Bulldog makes that exact same noise when he wants something, Bulldogs are great dogs full of personality
I just love Buddy!
Buddy says your appreciation of him is a sign of high intelligence. ;-)
Awe tell sweet Buddy i said thank you cutie!
thank you
Buddy kinda looks spaced out.
What a doll
Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahhaahahahahahhahaha
lol who’s coming up the Hill.
Buddy the wonder bulldog!
How would one of those work for pitting Nanking Cherries? They are about half the size of the sour ones you have in the video. What's the smallest cherry it will pit?
Hi Philip, not sure about this. Compare the pits, if the nanking pit is the same size or larger it should work. If the nanking cherry seed is smaller than a pie or sour cherry seed, I fear it won't work and the seed will be dispensed along with the cherry flesh and not separated.
Thank you soooo much for this. I just got a package from my Aunt. She sent me this exact stoner! I looked at it and thought well how do you use that! Now I know . Time to pit my cherries 🍒
So glad it helped!
Excellent! Glad you like it!
I got one. :-)
Thanks. My mom had one when cleaning out her house. I have tart cherry trees and this will make my jam making much easier.
Do you think this would work well with Wild Black Cherries (Prunus serotina)?
Colton I don't think so if they are like the wild black cherries I have; the seed is not freestone and hard to remove from the cherry.
very funny and cute
Thank you! Your help was immeasurable!
Thanks Donna, I really appreciate that.
Were there other models apart from the "16"?
Graham I've seen others around, they tend to just be called cherry stoners but share a similar design.
not sure, I've only seen the #16
I just made my own auger out of a ground anchor. Rattled through 100 or so bulbs in about half an hour!
Found this new, xylon coated, from walmart online for $77 shipped if anyone is interested.... Curious what varieties of sour cherry you have used successfully with this. I have mostly Carmine Jewel but also Juliet and Montmorency...
I've only tried it with Montmorency, the variety I grow.
I have Montmorency, and they work well in this old vintage gadget, but I use it mainly for jams, as it does a good job of mangling the cherry when removing the pit. So best used for cherries in sauces, jams, jellies, and chutneys.
Can you wash it with dish soap?
Yes, just dry it well after use.
yes, just dry thoroughly
I have a fig tree but don’t really know what kind I have. Right now all the figs are green can I assume it’s a green fig tree and won’t turn to purple?
Sour cherries are good to bake with chicken, too. Not just for pies anymore.
